2016-01 Type: Journal article Title: Modeling Spillover effects of Leapfrog development and Urban sprawl upon Institutional
delinquencies: A Case for Pakistan Publishing: Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences, Volume 216. Degree:
Other Study counsellor: Syed Toqueer Akhter Co-author(s): Muhammad Hammad Noon
Abstract
Land conversion from forest & agricultural to industrial & residential has raised serious concerns for Urban
Sprawl in Pakistan, causing Institutional polarization and delinquencies. This has inadvertent outcomes for
sustainability of urban development such as inefficient land distribution, high cost of travelling, more pollution,
more traffic congestion & higher value of time etc. Solving the Urban Sprawl problem is quite difficult therefore
government is trying to modulate the Urban Design. The motive of the research is to find out what are the main
reasons for Urban Sprawl in Pakistan and give policy guidance for the remedy of this issue. The research relies
upon data on institutional delinquencies associated with urban development in the economy and other data from
World Development Indicators such as Urban Population Growth Rate and Land Transformation to explain the
elements causing Urban Sprawl during the years 1997 to 2013. Robust regression has been used to illustrate
the Urban Sprawl as a function of different land and housing variables. The results show that Institutional
Ineffectiveness regarding Urbanization is significantly affected by the pressures been posed in form of Urban
Sprawl as well as Leapfrog Development.
2016-01 Type: Journal article Title: Outreach of financial institutions, access to information and Energy substitutability: A
Case for photovoltaic energy preferences in Agriculture sector of Pakistan Publishing: International Journal of
Environmental Science and Development, Vol. 7, No. 8 Degree: Other Study counsellor: Syed Toqueer Akhter Coauthor(
s): Raja Ramz Ullah
Abstract .
The study aims at testing the proposition that how outreach of financial institutions as well as the access to
information about alternate sources of energy affect inclination towards energy substitutability, significantly or
insignificantly. Furthermore, the study also tests a second hypothesis that government’s decision to associate
income tax with level of energy consumption from electricity distribution companies will affect agriculturalist’s
inclination to comply for the process of energy substitutability. Important stimuli for energy preferences such as
information regarding alternate sources of energy and installment costs of efficient photovoltaic energy systems
on the farm are also incorporated. Generalized Method of Moments was used to comprehensively establish the
relationship between outreach of financial institutions as well as access to information about energy
substitutability, upon the intent of farmers to switch towards other sources of energy. The results show that the
policy to link energy consumption and income tax can be a good policy tool to ensure that the ongoing process of
energy substitutability is sustainable in the long term. A need for state sponsored micro finance schemes as well
as the provision of Amber & Green Subsidy, can create ease for farmers in attaining photo voltaic energy systems
to ensure energy efficient solutions. Robust regression was used keeping in view the apprehension about the
possible existence of heteroscedasticity in cross sectional data. Furthermore it can also be used in order to
identify important observations.
2015-01 Type: Journal article Title: Inter-Jurisdictional governance coordination, community support and compliance with
the ILO 169 convention on indigenous rights: Findings of a Cross-sectional study of indigenous people of Kalash
valley in Pakistan Publishing: International Journal of Interdisciplinary Social Science Studies ,Volume 1, Issue 1
Degree: Other Study counsellor: Syed Toqueer Akhter Co-author(s): Mahina Ghalib
ABSTRACT
This study primarily focuses on the compliance/non-complianc e with the ILO 169 Convention, in relation to interjurisdictional
governance coordination and internal community support. The Convention allows for identity
preservation for indigenous communities. Keeping in view the micro-foundation of the proposed framework-ofanalysis,
a cross-sectional study was carried out on indigenous people from Bumburet Valley of the Kalash
region in the form of personal interviews, while sampling units were selected using convenience sampling. Over
the past decades, the Kalashi have faced both internal and external threats with regards to exercising their right to
self-determination and identity preservation in the society. For modelling purposes Robust Regression, Quantile
Regression and the Tobit Model were estimated, all of which rendered coherent results. Estimates of competing
econometric models imply that inter-jurisdictional governance coordination, appearing in the form of consultation
and functional autonomy, and community support, result in a positive-sum game for the indigenous Kalash, with
regards to compliance with the Convention.
2015-01 Type: Journal article Title: Self condemnation, Indebtedness and Financial Stress: Findings of a Cross-sectional
Study in Pakistan Publishing: European Scientific Journal Special edition Vol.1 Degree: Other Study counsellor:

Abstract
To determine various aspects of the Micro Economy that entails the foundation of Financial Stress arising for an
individual in Pakistan. The essential focus of this study is firstly, on how behavioral factors or Personality Traits

affect the degree of Financial Stress that an individual undergoes; and secondly, how conditions of Indebtedness
of a person accentuate the conditions of distress. Assortments of constraints arising from Dependency burdens
and Household Saving patterns that go hand-in-hand with the Economic Positionality are also brought into
consideration with the help of this paper, focusing solely on results obtained for developing nations, such as
Pakistan itself. Financial Stress was measured on a ten-item ordinal scale, consisting of a set of questions
included in the survey questionnaire, while the preferred models used in this paper consisted of Ordered Probit
and Tobit Models which estimated this cross-sectional study and the relationships of the two core variables; Self
Condemnation, as well as Indebtedness with individuals’ financial stress. This study therefore, was able to depict
that increased levels of Self Condemnation among individuals, due to a lack of resources or income, as well as
high rates of Personal Debt in proportion to Individual Incomes; both have a positive significant relationship with
the level of Financial Stress that these persons undergo. Government Policies and regulations of institutions can
however, have an auspicious impact on the micro level as exploitation of the underprivileged can be controlled,
and benefits be provided, leading to the uplifting of distress among the population.
2015-01 Type: Journal article Title: Impact assessment of International policy coordination with the WTO Technical barriers
to trade agreement and Foreign financial assistance upon the intent to comply with the agreement: Findings of a
Cross-sectional study of Mango exporters in Pakistan, Publishing: International Journal of Economic Policy in
Emerging Economies, 2016 Vol.9, No.3 Degree: Other Study counsellor: Syed Toqueer Akhter Co-author(s):
Maham Umar Bajwa
Abstract
The proliferated implication of the WTO technical regulations, especially as legal force, affects the compliance rate
of Pakistan's exporters with technical barriers to trade which hampers the export growth and potential of
agriculture and processed food from the country. The study explores the extent to which the mango exporters of
Pakistan conform to the WTO technical barriers to trade (TBT). The TBT imposed by the World Trade Organization
is not desired to impede exports but it does restrict the exporters of developing countries like Pakistan, who are
limited by inadequate financial resources and expertise, to exploit their full potential. Based on the survey-based
approach, a sample of exporters from major mango producing regions of Punjab and Sindh has been taken for
an experimental study. Compliance rate, measured on an ordinal scale of 1-5, estimated through ordered probit
and ordinary least square econometric modelling techniques revealed parallel outcomes.
2015-01 Type: Conference proceedings Title: Reciprocity and Interdependence in bilateral ties between Pakistan & India: A
Game theoretic explanation Publishing: Conference Proceeding, Law Conference 2015 (Cambridge) Series.
Degree: Other Study counsellor: Syed Toqueer Akhter Co-author(s): Ali Ahmed Aamir
ABSTRACT
The study aims to restate the reasons for conflict between India and Pakistan for almost seven decades as well
as the likelihood of options and preferences with regards to the direction of the foreign policy. The current episodic
composite dialogues are unstable and do not promote regional integration to the extent of improving relations,
rather act as temporary glue to the concept of achieving peace. The Confidence Building Measures being used in
the dispute settlement mechanism have the propensity to change with time and inconsistencies in regards with
cooperation and non-cooperation for respective regimes both in India and Pakistan. Thus, intrastate matters build
up to become interstate problems. For this reason, the model of game theory is being employed to reshape and
restructure the level of importance given to problems according to their magnitude, and strategic approaches to
resolving disputes through different mediums like bilateral dialogues.
2014-01 Type: Journal article Title: Geopolitics of International relations for Pakistan, US political regimes and the US
bilateral Aid to Pakistan Publishing: GSTF Journal of Law and Social Sciences (JLSS) , Volume 4, Issue 1 Degree:
Other Study counsellor: Syed Toqueer Akhter Co-author(s): Haider Imran
Abstract
There have been several fluctuations in US Aid inflows to Pakistan throughout the country’s inception; The Cold
War, involving the US and the Soviet Union and the Russian invasion in Afghanistan in 1979, and then the events
of 9/11 (War against Terrorism), were major global phenomena which were shaping US’ foreign policy towards
Pakistan, depending upon the perceived geopolitical significance of Pakistan for the US. Such volatility of Foreign
Aid may have serious outcomes for the recipient country in form of lack of sustainability of economic
growth & the external sector of the economy. This paper tries to assess the importance of various supply side
(US) factors regarding Aid giving; strategic importance of Aid recipient with regard to Geopolitics of International
relations, US political regime, trade openness of recipient, etc. Two competing econometric modeling choices
were employed namely the PraisWinsten and the Distributed lag models, so that to comprehensively validate the
intensity of the impact of the above mentioned supply side factors of US bilateral Aid to Pakistan. After obtaining
Durbin-Watson and Breush-Pagan estimates, it was inferred that the estimated models were free from any
significant serial correlation and heteroskedasticity, respectively. It is found that geopolitical importance of
Pakistan with regards to the Geopolitics of International relations, the US political regime and the trade openness
of Pakistan are among the significant factors determining the size of bilateral Aid from US. However, the recipient
regime proved to be insignificant.
2014-01 Type: Journal article Title: Political Economy of Regime switching and preferences for Inter-temporal
Consumption: An application to Pakistan Publishing: Review of Integrative Business & Economics Research. Vol
3(2) Degree: Other Study counsellor: Syed Toqueer Akhther Co-author(s): Fatima Tanvir
ABSTRACT
Impulse buying behavior, based on the time- inconsistent preferences theory, has been subject to disastrous
personal and societal consequences but still has been in vogue for many years. The paper discusses time
inconsistent consumption propensities in Pakistan, primarily impulsive purchasing in relation to two competing
regimes, namely democratic regime and military rule. Amnesty International Ratings reported high political
imprisonment and terror during military eras in Pakistan, signifying widespread repression. This creates
emptiness in people, provoking an environment of distress and anxiety, to overcome which people indulge in
consumerism in order to create their own social identity. In the analysis, the interplay of political regime with the
intent upon buying behavior has been conferred through the aspect of terrorism that is more rampant in
democratic regimes than otherwise as they are viewed as politically unstable. The freedom of media and civil
liberties lowers the cost of carrying out terrorism in democracy while creating an environment of uncertainty that
induces fear and risk in decision making and discourages purchases. In the study, primary data was collected
using unstructured questionnaires from respondents of various social classes across Pakistan. In order to
validate the impact of regime, alone and in interaction with terrorism and inflation two competing models, namely
Ordered Probit and Median Regression have been estimated. Both models suggest that in democratic regimes,
people exhibit less impulsivity in purchases as the risk and incidences of terrorism leads to fear arousal and
creates a sense of insecurity therefore a negative relationship is seen among the two. -------------
