Om Sunniva

Teaching children and teenagers (ungdom) is just fun. I have often said that spending my work day with young people is way better than spending a work day with adults. How many adults get to sing and dance, read storybooks, do art projects, goof around, laugh, and experience the joy of learning everyday? One of my tenets of teaching is to have fun with my students. I have found that when I have fun, and my students have fun, everyone forgets that we are actually working on something, and learning happens much more easily and naturally. I have fun by being myself, making connections with students, and not being afraid to have moments of spontaneous activity in class—not being afraid to simply be in the moment with young souls experiencing happiness and joy in a learning environment.

1) ESA model; engage, study, activate (assessments through games and music). The engagement part happens when I greet your students. I might ask how they're doing or how they spent their weekend, what their thoughts are about a specific current event or something that relates to the lesson I'm about to give. The 'study' phase is when I introduce new material and students make their first forays into it.
'Activate' means using the language skills they just learned. Discussion and role-playing are common ways to activate a lesson; I may also play word games... or any other type of game. The ESA model is not limited to learning English; I can use it to teach anything from the sciences to history.
Playing games tests my students' comprehension of my subject material and, more importantly, allows them to use what they've just learned - an educational aspect so often neglected in current teaching practices.

2) Casual conversations: Studies have shown that the use of humour can have a positive effect on students, greatly increasing their level of engagement and interest. I encourage students to bring comics, funny quotes or jokes to class and dedicate a few minutes to having a good laugh in the language they are learning (Spanish).This will make them confident enough to speak and use the grammar.

3) The Socratic Method; This form of instruction is sometimes called the inquiry method. It is based upon a student’s current level of understanding of a subject. Questions progress from what the student knows, and progresses towards new ideas that the tutor guides the student toward with directed questioning.

4) Different activities such as reading out loud, writing something they like, and talking about a subject of their interest. Grammar and vocabulary will be worked based on this.
