Om Candice
I am a native English speaking Canadian who has been professionally teaching high-level English for the past 10 years and editing academic work for the past 5 years. I am also a professional writer and content creator.
I have been in Norway for nearly two years, and in that time I have worked with NTNU in various capacities. I've helped get a Master's thesis ready for publication, I've edited PhD dissertations, and even taught a full-day seminar on academic writing for nursing masters students. I am happy to provide work references on request.
I am (finally) pursuing my Master's degree in creative writing, and I spent nearly two years attending professional-level writing workshops in Amersterdam's International Writer's Collective, where I received instruction and writing critique from established, published authors (the instruction was equivalent to a masters in writing without the degree!). In addition, I hold a 60-hour TOEFL certificate from Oxford Seminars and a Level 1 TKT certificate from Cambridge.
I have a personal hobby (obsession) with linguistics, English, and all things involving the written word. You will doubtlessly be subjected to extracts from my embarrassingly large library of writing advice and English theory. If you let me, I will unleash my encyclopedic knowledge of my field to empower you to have fun with language!

I am offering a course to help mitigate some of the blank screen panic one experiences when undertaking huge writing projects like a bachelor/masters thesis or a PhD dissertation. This course is specifically designed for non-native speakers of English but is easily useful for native speakers as well.
Forget the standard vague advice like "be concise and convincing!" or "create a logical flow!' - I will not give you any such unactionable advice. My curriculum is designed to give specific advice that is easily adopted and always fully explained.
The course is taught over a period of six weeks, in an online one-on-one setting. You will have the opportunity to create six pieces of writing, which we will review in great detail. At the end of the course, you will not only feel more comfortable writing in English, but you will also have many skills and strategies to help get your ideas out of your head and onto the page.
Some areas we will cover:
- how to separate 'content creation' (ideas) and 'content description' (words to describe the ideas)
- how to use multiple drafts to lessen your workload ( I swear, writing it once, reading it over, and making changes takes more time!)
- how to write in a 'scholarly' way without losing clarity and concision
- we will discuss the phenomena of 'International English' and how to write clearly for native and non-native speakers of English (and to avoid mistakes that crop up in International English in European academia!)
- how to confidently use advanced punctuation like semi-colons (;), colons (:), and em-dashes (--)
- learn when to use passive sentence structures, and when/how to use more active structures
- become more comfortable with understanding your reader - how to create a consistent tone and confidently determine the appropriate level of explanation and information your reader requires
- Also included is a booklet full of sentence structures for first drafts, editing strategies for second drafts, and a plethora of sentence specific construction tips that are actionable and reproduced in writing tasks!
