Hi! My name is James Patterson and I am a french horn player from Seattle Washington. I moved to Norway 2 years ago because I received an internship from Oslo Philharmonic, and have been studying Natural Horn at Norges Musikkhøgskole. I previously studied at the Juilliard School with Erik Ralske (principal horn in the Metropolitan Opera) and Indiana University with Dale Clevenger (former principal horn in Chicago Symphony).

My method and approach to the french horn is compiled from all of my mentors and teachers from around the world. I believe in making the french horn as easy as possible by having a focus on practicing the basic harmonic series and practicing scales. Along with these basics, I believe that people like to listen and to play melodies, so my method involves a lot of playing what you want to play. This can be anything from Beatles songs, Jazz (my personal favorite), Bach cello suites, lyrical etudes, or anything you like!! As my former teacher Dale Clevenger told me, "your imagination is your only limitation". The most important part of learning is to have fun doing it.
Since moving to Oslo, I have learned quite a lot of Norwegian, but am not comfortable writing yet. Music is a universal language, and a lot of learning is from listening and copying. However, I can teach in both English and Norwegian, but would prefer English.
