Om Kathleen
Nice to meet you, I am Kathleen!
I come from the Netherlands, and moved to Norway in 2023 because I love the mountains and the snow. As long as my Norwegian isn't quite fluent yet, I can only teach in English, but I don't let that hold me back. I am a language and linguistics enthusiast with a bachelors and masters degree in related fields. I am an aspiring novelist, currently working various jobs to fund my literary habits with time to spare for writing.
I have studied many different languages in many different contexts, and I invariably struggled with the standardised way in which they were taught. I've always found it a spirit-crushing affair to sit down to cram a vocabulary list or a grammar schematic into my head. Getting rid of graded exams and instead learning to understand why languages do what they do, and how they are actively used in everyday life, has given me back the joy in learning languages, which is the principle on which I aim to teach as well.

I am a native Dutch speaker with a bachelors degree in English and a masters' degree in Old Norse philology, and I have followed multiple university level courses on linguistics and language acquisition. I believe in a fluid teaching model, based on active usage and functional understanding of a language rather than the cramming of word lists and the memorising of grammar. When I teach, I don't follow a set method, but instead find out what it is the student wants to do with their target language before coming up with a plan of action. For someone with an immediate need to improve their ability to communicate verbally, it would be a waste of time to focus heavily on writing exercises, for example!
I have used this method previously to teach and tutor English to both children and adults using the Dutch version of Superprof. Since I have only moved to Norway last year, I understand Norwegian but can currently only actively teach in English. Duration and location of the classes is flexible, and all ages, levels of advancement, and purposes of learning are welcome!
