Deb contacted the local church office asking for me to do their wedding. Our secretary told her I was retired, but charmingly strong-willed Deb didn’t give up, and a long story short: One of my best memories from my years as a parish pastor is this wedding, both the ceremony and all the planning. Yes, especially the planning; she had so many original and beautiful plans for the ceremonial program -! Norwegian church order and liturgy is quite rule-driven and detail-focused, but she managed perfectly to balance between respect for rules and frames on the one side and eager love for the beauty of the plans. I am quite sure she will be a good teacher striving eagerly for lovely originality, but in respect for rules and frames. To speak as old preachers always have done – in metaphors: The engine is very strong, but the steering also works well.
