Om Dogan Can
I'm Dogan, a Data Engineer based in Oslo with over 5 years of professional experience across data science, machine learning, and data engineering. I currently work as a Data Engineer at Bane NOR, Norway's national railway infrastructure company.
Before that, I worked as a Data Scientist at Unacast, a global location intelligence company, where I analyzed human mobility patterns using GPS and telecom data. I've also worked as a Machine Learning Engineer at Memory, improving the interpretability of over 2,000 classification models, and as a Data Science Intern at Fraudio, a fintech startup, where I built fraud-detection models using SHAP and LIME for interpretability.
I hold an M.Sc. in Data Science and Scientific Computing from the University of Trieste (graduated with a top score of 110/110) and a B.Eng. in Industrial Engineering from Yildiz Technical University.
Throughout my career, I've worked hands-on with the exact tools and concepts I teach — Python, SQL, machine learning, and data pipelines — in real production environments, not just in theory. My goal as a tutor is to pass on that practical, real-world understanding, so you learn skills that translate directly into projects, coursework, or your own career.
I'm passionate about making data science and data engineering approachable, and I take teaching seriously: every lesson is prepared with your specific goals in mind.

My teaching approach
I like to start each topic with a clear explanation of the concept — the "why" and "how" — before we get hands-on. Once you understand the theory, we move into small, guided tasks where we apply it together in real time. This way you're never just copying code blindly; you understand the logic behind it and can reproduce it on your own afterward.
I adapt my teaching style depending on your background — if you're completely new to programming, we'll start with the fundamentals of Python and build confidence with simple exercises before moving into data analysis or machine learning concepts. If you already have some experience, we can dive straight into more advanced topics like model building, data pipelines, or SQL.
Lesson format
Lessons run 60 or 90 minutes, either in person in Oslo or online via video call. Each session typically follows the same rhythm: a short recap, a focused explanation of the new concept, and then small practical tasks to apply what we covered. I usually recommend starting with a short chat to understand your goals, then structuring a plan around them — whether that's passing a course, switching careers, or building a specific project.
